Choosing Your MLM

With literally hundreds of business opportunities available, how do you pick?  Just because you go to a party and want your hostess to get a special gift is not a reason to sign up to distribute a product.  You really have to LOVE it.

Assume off the bat, that everyone is going to be skeptical to your new found business.  Most will say it’s a scam and you’ll never make any money.  That’s kind of true, but less apt to happen if you really love and believe in the product.  Would you be able to defend the brand to a total stranger that hit you with questions and concerns over and over?  Why does it work? How does it work? Yada Yada.

Consider a few things before you dive in:

  • The company you select has to be stable, financially I mean.  After all, they need to be able to pay you.
  • How do they pay you? Monthly? Weekly?
  • Is it a binary line? (My preference)
  • There should be an 800 number for you to call with questions so you aren’t hiking up your phone bill.
  • The market should not be too over saturated, but it is good that lots of people know of the brand.
  • When you do a search on the web for the company, there should not be a slew of complaints and grievances about the brand.
  • What do you get with the sign up fee? Is it an annual renewal? Do you get a website?
  • Choose your upline wisely.  If you are doing internet sales, consider signing under a rep that is already advertising on the web.  If not, then find someone close to you that you can rely on for training.
  • Do they make you sign up for an auto ship? Most give the impression that you have to, but if you really read the policies, many do not require you to have one.

Upline Isn't As Easy As It Looks

The way MLMs works sounds very simple. You find two friends, then they find two friends, etc. It is a simple concept, but it is not easy. The idea of the simplicity of it is what attracts so many people to find their dream job sitting at the top of a 50 level pyramid. Okay, well maybe 5 levels and maybe it’s not a dream job. My point is that it is NOT easy. Don’t think for a minute that you will only work a couple hours a week and share your product with a few friends and be uber successful.

The truth is that it take HARD work while you grow your business. Your higher level people are probably managing their business from their patio. That can be an option some day, but you have to WORK to get there. That said, when your upline is sending you emails and following up with your training, etc. It’s a good thing. Learn from them. After all, you signed up under them for a reason right?

There is a fine line between becoming an annoyance and making you wish you would’ve never made the commitment and being a support system for the people who support you. If you have a team that is holding you up, throw them some bones occasionally. Instead of sending 2-3 emails a week to pressure them in to making a sale “follow up”, send them a thank you note. Even better, give them a sale or place someone under them. I am involved with a company (who shall remain nameless). I know my upline is getting people to sign up quite a bit. Have they placed anyone under me within the past six months? No. If you are an upline, don’t be greedy. Pay it forward, build your team from the ground up.

Pampered Chef Does Not Allow Links

I was contemplating joining the Pampered Chef Sales Program until I stumbled upon this online:

You can click on the image to see the original posting from a PC Community site.  (By the way, that is a great idea)

What it basically says is that PC consultants can not post a link to their replicated site ANYWHERE on the internet.  Whoa!  Why??  Is this true? Why in the world would PC prevent its sales team from marketing their product on the one thing that is bigger and badder than all of us (the internet)? In my opinion, if you aren’t savvy and advertising on the internet, you are missing out on sales.  I know this from plenty of experiences which I will blog about later.

No offense what so ever to the lovely ladies of PC.  Believe me, I know you are working hard, but wouldn’t it be so nice for you to be able to link to your sales site in communities that you network in like Facebook?

So now here is the downside to PC decision to not allow links to their consultant sites.  The competition gets to get links to their sites and eventually rank for the company name. Anyone out there selling high end kitchen gadgets? I see an opportunity here.

End result, I will not be joining the ranks of PC ladies across America, even though I must say I do love the products and the food at the parties.

How to Host a Good Home Party

Hosting a home party for the purpose of selling a product requires preparation and sometimes perspiration.

Keep in mind that your hostess will have to do alot of the leg work, so you want to stay in good communication with her, but not to the point that you are bugging her. Otherwise it makes it easy for her to cancel.

When you have your initial conversation make sure to put her at ease and ask a few questions.

  • Ask her how many guests she thinks she can have.
  • Ask if she has a Facebook or Twitter and encourage her to post her event so her friends can see it.  Sending an event invitation through Facebook is also a good way to let her friends know about it.
  • Ask if she wants to make the party a fundraiser for a school or sports team. (Lots of people don’t realize this in an option and it can result in more sales and contacts for you.)
  • Find out how she will be sending invitations. Most people do it by email now, but a nice touch is to send a reminder through the mail about a week before the party. If she addresses the invites, tell her you’ll mail them.

The day before the party ask if your hostess can send a reminder email.

The day of the party plan on arriving early enough to set up so that everything runs smoothly.  If you can, bring an appetizer.

Everyone knows that when they attend a home product party, they will have to buy something.  I mean I use the word “have” lightly, but seriously there is somewhat of an expectation.

Hosting a party can still be fun and not filled with pressure to buy anything.

Here are a few tips you can use to lighten the mood.

  • Play a Game- There are many games you can play to break the ice with your guests.  A simple Google search on that will point you to LOTS.
  • Have Wine- People’s wallets are always a little looser when they are.  A glass of wine can reduce the tension and help with the atmosphere in the room.
  • Give Samples- Many companies provide samples with the sign up kit.  You can also order extra.  Remember that presentation is everything, so make sure your samples look nice and if possible make sure your name or web address is on them somehow,
  • Have a Giveaway- Make sure everyone that places an order is automatically entered in a giveaway.  You choose what works best for you.  An example would be to have a full sized product there and pick the winner that night.  Or you can say they are added to a monthly drawing for the product and you will notify them if they won.  (I recommend the first one, it’s more exciting.)
  • Have the Guests Participate- Ask lots of questions from the room.  For example, if you are selling skin care products go around and ask the ladies what their favorite skin care products are or what their daily regimen is, etc.  Get them talking.

When the party is over, offer to help clean up.  It will only take you a few minutes to pick up trash and help clean up and it will g a long way.

MOST IMPORTANT

Have a pre made thank you card for your hostess.  Leave it somewhere that you know she will see it right away. Like by her door or in the kitchen somewhere.

Converting an Interested Prospect

handshakeWith so many replicated distributor sites out there, it’s likely that eventually you will get an applicant interested in joining your team.  Typically you’ll receive a notification via email that someone has filled out a form online.

Fantastic!! Now what?

Email them back right away.  Don’t be too pushy you will scare them off.  In your email tell the prospect just a little about yourself and let them know you are available to answer any questions.  If you have a flyer that is provided by the company with their compensation plan (and if they allow you to) attach it to the email.

What a day, then call them.  Keep in mind that they did contact you first, so don’t feel weird about calling.  Just make it casual, don’t be too over baring.  After all, you want them to like you right? Ask them some general questions like:

  • Have you ever been involved with direct sales before?
  • If they are married/kids?
  • If they are currently working?

You get the idea right?

Make them comfortable and make them want to talk about themselves.  Then if the conversation is going smoothly try asking:

  • How they heard about the product and if they have ever tried it?
  • If they have thought about how they could sell/marketing the product?

Basically begin asking a few more business related questions.

Ask them if they want to know more about the product(s).  Share some of your experiences.  Tell them how you found the company, etc.  Be brief, they don’t need the whole history of the company.

If there are a few pricing options to join give them the options and a quick run down on the differences.

Leave them with that and if you can send them a catalog or samples offer to do that at this point.  Get there address and send them what you can.

If you don’t hear back call them in 5-7 days and follow up.  You will know be then if they are committed or not.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Autoships – To Order or Not to Order

fineprintAutoships are often required to be “Active” within a MLM/Direct Sales company.  What ends up happening is you sign up to be a distributor and during the sign up process you are required to have an autoship order.  Typically an autoship is around $50-$80 each month and shipped on the same day.

That said, sometimes you either forget about the autoship, so it appears at your door even though you may have not wanted it or you feel like you have to have it in order to be “Active”.  Thing is that is only profitable if you have enough sales to warrant the active status.  For example, let’s say you have a $80 autoship with tax and shipping it will probably come out to around $105.  Your commissions for the first month are only $45.  You’ve just spent $105 to get $45.  It might be a better option for you to stop your autoship until your commission exceeds the amount you have to spend.  Some companies (God bless them) like ItWorks Marketing® have an autoship requirement, but if your personal sales volume exceeds a certain dollar amount, they do not require you to have the autship in order to be “active” or get paid.

Each company has it’s own fine print in regards to the monthly autoship, so make sure you read and/or call the company to get the correct information and save that money.  You can allocate it toward marketing another way.

Isagenix® Offers Health Insurance Options

insuranceIsagenix® is a health focused company that is offering options for health benefits to its associates.

Isagenix is a leader in home cleansing products including their 9-day and 30-day cleanse.  Their products are geared toward people that want a healthier way of life and Isagenix puts their money where their mouth is by offering health options (with some provisions of course).

Here are a few samples of their eligibility requirements.

  • Earn a minimum of $300 in commission in the six months prior to enrollment.
  • History of three Autoships with a minimum of 100bv (bv=bonus volume) each shipped within the last six months prior to enrollment.
  • New members can enroll upon meeting the criteria—so no need to wait for the next open enrollment period.

I wish I could list all the specifics, but they might change something and I don’t want to steer you the wrong way.

I have tried Isagenix, it’s an easy sell if you know people in health care, gyms, vitamin shops, etc.  The shakes taste great and it costs under $100 to sign up as an associate.

For more info about signing up to be an Isagenix associate, click here.

10 Things You Didn't Expect to Spend Money On That Impact Your Bottom Line

dollar signsDistributors are often excited by a great sales pitch fed to them by someone they are dying to work for.  I mean that’s usually how it works.  We meet a great woman (or man) that is so uber knowledgeable about the product that we want to be just like her.  We want to “live the dream” and retire at 50! We sign up for the small fee and place a huge order before we can even notice that we have spent the next 3 months income.  In some cases this is ok if you have an established marketing budget, but more times than not we don’t.  Most of these home based businesses consultants co-mingle money with home funds.  The money going in and out of the check book is not well monitored and one can easily be spending way more than they are making on a business with no model other than to spread the news via word of mouth.

My suggestion would be before you sign up for a direct sales company, ask your upline what expenses outside of the sign up fee you should expect to put out in the first 90 days.  Add $250 to that so you have a cushion.

Don’t get me wrong.  You do have to spend money to make money in most cases, but you have to know what you are getting yourself in to.  Here are a few things you need to plan for.

  • Business Cards
  • Additional fees for websites
  • Autoship
  • Samples
  • Phone Bills
  • Gas
  • Travel Expenses
  • Show Fees
  • Home Party Samples and Hostess Gifts
  • Advertising

These are in no particular order, but trust me, they are things you will come across.

How Do I Get An 800 Number?

800numberIt’s not as hard as you think, or expensive.  If you are using the web to market your business you would think that there was no need for a phone number right? Wrong!  Believe it or not, there are thousands of people that still feel weird about ordering online.  They would rather give their credit card number to a total stranger on the other end of an 800 number.  That said, getting an 800 number was one of the best things I did to promote my sales sites.  Not a day goes buy that my phone does not ring.  True that sometimes they think they are calling the company, but the orders I get make up for the other calls.

I don’t want to quote you specific fees, but I use Kall8.com and I pay less than $25 per month for a vanity 866 number. Vanity meaning the number spells out a word.

Setting this up is EASY and takes less than 10 minutes.  You can forward the number to ring at your house or cell and you can also set up a notifier that will email you when you get a call with the caller’s phone number at no additional charge.

There are lots of companies that offer this service.  In most cases you pay around $2-$5 for a non-vanity number, then like 5-9 cents a minute for the calls.

If you sign up for an 800 number through Kall8, please give them my number and I get a $5 credit. 866-526-7337
